WPM Explained: How Typing Speed Is Calculated
3 October 2026 · Typing Quest
"Words per minute" sounds simple, but tests calculate it in different ways. Here is exactly how Typing Quest does it, so your numbers mean something.
A "word" is five characters
Words have different lengths, so typing tests use a standard word of five characters, including spaces and punctuation. Typing 250 characters in one minute is 50 WPM, regardless of which words you typed.
Gross, net and raw speed
- Gross WPM: characters in your final text ÷ 5 ÷ minutes.
- Net WPM (our headline number): gross WPM minus one word per minute for every error you left uncorrected.
- Raw WPM: every keystroke, including mistakes and characters you later deleted. It shows how fast your fingers move, not how productive you were.
Accuracy
Accuracy is the share of keystrokes that were correct the first time. If you type a wrong letter and then fix it, the text ends up correct — but the mistake still counts against accuracy. That is deliberate: accuracy should describe your habits, not just the final text.
Consistency
Consistency shows how even your speed was across the test, second by second. A high score means a steady rhythm; a low score means bursts and pauses.
Why test conditions matter
A 15-second test and a 2-minute test are not directly comparable, and neither are physical keyboards and phone keyboards. That is why our leaderboards separate categories and only include server-verified tests on a physical keyboard.
